"...to follow up our recent conversations regarding the use of ARISEnet as our electronic solution to a major issue at our high school. BFA, a school with 130 faculty and 1200 students’ grades 9-12, embraced the Breaking Ranks II as our model for school reform and renewal. The ARISEnet system has been one of the most forward thinking developments I have been involved with in my teaching career. It embraces student responsibility on all levels, encouraging students to seek out the activities or tutoring that they need, places this scheduling in the hands of the student rather than the teacher, and rewards the student for following through on the plans they have made. Its use of the internet makes it accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In my particular situation as a band director, it has been a dream come true. I have a roster of students pre-assigned to my classroom on a rotating weekly schedule of sectional rehearsals where students can get more individualized instruction on their chosen instruments. Since we have a shortage of private lesson teachers in our area, this has given me the time in the day to make up some of those losses. Students who are not involved in sectionals for a given day are able to use the system and sign out for practice rooms to work on their music individually. Since this system has gone into affect, our five practice rooms, which were once rarely used, have been filled almost everyday! Also, if students don't turn in homework, I sign them up for my Advisory. They are still required to do the homework even though they will earn no class points.
